UED102-STUDY SKILLS

Assalamualaikum,hi everyone.My name is Muhammad Syahrul Nizam Bin Zainal.I am study at Universiti Teknologi Mara Cawangan Pahang Kampus Jengka..I study Diploma in Science (AS120) and now I was in interim session before I start my journey in diploma study.The best thing study in this campus is it only takes 25 minutes from my home to get here😃 because I live in Jerantut,Pahang.

In this interim session,I have studied a few important topics about study skills in UED102.I want share what I have learned but before that let's take a look at the words below:

TOPIC-Getting Ready To Learn

*Identify your particular challenges:

-time management

-procrastination

-reading skills

-note-taking skills                                        

-test-taking skills

-motivation

-test anxiety

-comprehension issues

                    

*Develop a plan for attacking each area

*not to mention:

-you will be independent in dorm life

-you will have a job in future

-you will meet many new friends

-you may be in relationship

-you will stay at new place/state/city

-you will join many indoor and outdoor activities

-you may be managing your own money
  for the first time

*Class time and study time

we all know that in school,class meet about an hour a day for 180 days a year but in college,classes only meet about 3 hours a week for 15 weeks.

*how to step up my game:

-always study the assigned topic and material before class as preparation

-get notes from missed classes from a valid source

-do not miss the class because you need to catch up

-go to class early to avoid hurrying and can get time to review notes and also readings

-make a daily schedule or use a planner to manage my time

-make a master list of all assignments,projects,and exams for the entire semester

-now our styles and plan the schedule for classes accordingly

-use your own word in writing down what lecturer said

-know your lecture to improve relationship

-you have to know what is the effective and comfortable learning method

-dont be shy and be brave to ask help

*between school and college academics:
-you will get assignments to do and they may not be checked
-only spend a few hours in class
-you will live in your study place.It can save money for transportation
-You need to think about what will be ask in the exam or test and quiz
-must remember dates and exam by yourself
-need to be bookworm

-lecturers may not be trained in instruction
-will study in bigger and more comfortable class

-maybe will have an international instructor

-lecture and readings may not overlap 100%

-studying and behaviour is our responsibility

-need to be independent because only have a certain instructor for a few months

-you have to know what notes to take

-you can drop a class in college
-more time to study outside
-may have a TA or GA as an instructor/lecturer
  *campus resources:
-if you have problem academic,you can go to Student Academic Support Services
-if you have personal problem or any problem about test,you can go to Counseling and Testing   Centre,Asses for Success
-Office of Services for Students with Disabilities
-You can go to the Career Services office to learn about various occupations which is something you will have to do when you are trying to decide which one to choose.

TOPIC-Goal Setting

*WHAT IS GOAL???

-the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result

-in varsity life,it is important to have goals

-goals will motivate you to study hard

-at the same time,you can improve your academic performance

-get better future

*Characteristic of GOALS:
1.self-chosen(choose the goal by yourself)
2.moderately challenging(not too burden yourself and beyond your ability)
3.realistic(considering the chance of success are significantly high. This may include technology,  emotional resources, skills, time and priority.)
4.measurable(know if the goal is obtainable and how far away completion is)
5.specific(well defined)
6.finite(make the goal finite)
7.positive(goals with benefits)

TOPIC-Time Management

*Definition of TIME:

Noun-the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past,present,and future
Verb-plan,schedule,or arrange when (something) should happen or be done.

*Definition of TIME MANAGEMENT:

...is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time damages your effectiveness and causes stress.

*how to avoid PROCRASTINATION???

1)Eliminate distraction
2)Use your strongest sensation to memorise things because each student has their own learning style
3)Set your self deadlines- working with specific time limits
4)Work when you feel most alert and efficient- as student,wake up early in the morning for study to     get effective time

TOPIC-Memory Learning and Improving Concentration

*What is MEMORY???
  -Ability of an individual to encode,store and retrieve information

*What is BRAIN???
 -An organ of animal or human that serves as the central nervous system-More than 100 Billion nerves that communicate in trillions of connection collect synapses.

*Learning Pyramid

                        

There are various methods a learner can engage in which will allow them to learn information at various percentages of retention.

*types of MEMORY:

1)SENSORY MEMORY
 -allows individuals to retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimulus has ceased.

2)SHORT-TERM MEMORY
 -a small amount of information in mind in an active,readily available state for a short period of time.

3)LONG-TERM MEMORY
 -for the storage of information for an extended period of time
      
*why do we forget easily?
1)distraction from all aspects
2)lack of focus
3)time factor

                                - REPETITION and REHEARSAL is very important-
                                                                            

MEMORY STRATEGIES:

-there are many ways to memories information such as pocket notes,mind-mapping and poem.

*how to improve strategies???

1)MASSED PRACTICE
 -compressed all works in one time
 -do not have enough time to understand
 -last minute study

2)SPACED PRACTICE
 -involves space time over some period of time for learning
 -enough time to understand
-very recommendable

3)REHEARSAL STRATEGIES
 -studying material
 -involves repetition
 -for example,past year questions

4)ELABORATION STRATEGIES
 -imagery = visualize th image of the information needed
 -acronyms = an abbreviation formed from the initial lettersof other words and pronounced as a word
 -acrostics = a poem,word puzzle,or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a         word or words.
 -mnemonics = a system such as letters ,ideas or associations which assists in remembering     something.

*CAUSE of poor concentration:

-lack of attention
-less motivation
-distraction from any aspects
-uncomfortable environment(heat,cold)
-not interesting
-psychological matters (personal,worries,anxiety)
-physiological matters(illness,tiredness)

TOPIC-Taking Lecture Notes


Note taking is copy any notes given by lecturers as self-understanding by using our own words for easy to remember.

*the purpose:
-easy to make review for test,exam and quiz
-keep focus in class
-not forget what the lecturer has taught
-activate the senses
-thinking of ideas
-organize and process data and information
-helps the lecture now the level of understanding of students about information

*the importance in reviewing notes:
-we will probably forget what we hear if it is not review
-identify any question to ask lecturer for the next class
-we do not have enough time to absorb the information
-as preparation to answer any question given by lecturer

*Importance of recapture notes after class:
-it is better way to study than re-copying                                                          
-you can saves hours of studying
-can study next chapter
-review the days before test,exam,quiz

AVOID PLAGIARISM:
-what-copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original ideas.

-type:

1. Direct plagiarism
 taking someone else’s ideas or work and claiming them as your own, without citation.

2. Paying for someone else’s work
 other people write your essay for you and handing it in with your name on it.

3. Self-plagiarism

paraphrasing becomes plagiarism when you read different sources, write key points and then rewrite these points

D6	Passed all courses required by a programme and fulfilled all the requirements of the programme but acquired a CGPA of less than 2.00
